Teens Do Not See Abstinence In The Same Way Adults Do
�Abstinence can mean different things to adolescents than to adults. That's one reason why abstinence-only programs do not have strong effects in preventing teenage sexual activity, according to new University of Washington research.
"Interventions that have been created to encourage abstinence have treated abstinence and sexual activity as opposites. However, teenagers say they don't think of them as opposites," said Tatiana Masters, lead author of a new study and UW doctoral student in social work. "These interventions are less likely to work than more comprehensive sex-education programs because they are not meeting adolescents where they are, and they are speaking a different language."
The study showed that attitudes and intentions about sex were more powerful than attitudes and intentions about being abstinent.
"This paper demonstrates that increasing abstinence intention does not lead to less sex. In fact, when abstinence intention and sex intention interact with each other a teenager is more likely to have sex," said Masters.
Rather than being an either or choice, she said, a teenager's decision to become sexually active can be likened to getting on an escalator. At first, adolescents don't think about sex very much. Once they step on the escalator the first step is abstinence. Then as they begin to be aware of sex, there are other steps and choices to be made that eventually lead to having intercourse.
The study involved 365 adolescents - 230 girls and 135 boys - recruited from community centers, youth programs and after-school programs for a larger research project testing an intervention to reduce HIV risk behavior among young teenagers in Seattle.
The participants filled out questionnaires before starting the larger HIV intervention, eight weeks later when the intervention was completed, and then six and 12 months later. The questionnaires assessed the adolescents' attitudes and intentions about being abstinent and having sex and also asked about their sexual activity in the previous six months.
At the start of the study, 11 percent of the boys and 4 percent of the girls had had sexual intercourse. Those numbers increased to 12 percent of the boys and 8 percent of the girls six months later and 22 percent of the boys and 12 percent of the girls one year later.
Currently there is no federal funding for any comprehensive sex-education program in the country, but funding for abstinence-only programs has mushroomed, increasing from $9 million in1997 to $176 million in 2007.
In the paper, however, the researchers conclude that "our findings raise serious concerns about the abstinence-only approach as a risk-reduction method for adolescent sexual behavior."
Masters added: "The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate among developing nations, and rates of sexually transmitted diseases in this country are high. The risks are real, and if people want to keep teens safe from the negative outcomes of sex, abstinence-only programs are not the way to go. More comprehensive programs that include abstinence as one choice are much more likely to have the outcomes we want - that teenagers eventually will be in a positive and fulfilling sexual relationship."
She said the study was not an evaluation of abstinence-only programs, noting that others studies have shown they don't have an effect on delaying sexual activity. Part of the problem is the way abstinence is taught.
"Abstinence-only programs often only look at the negatives of sex, not the positive. This is especially important for young women who need to have control over having sex and having safe sex," Masters said. "With these programs you often hear 'sex just happens' and adolescents are having less safe sex. This detracts from adolescents having a choice, and this leads to more dangerous sex with more sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancies."
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute of Mental Health supported the study published in the current issue of the journal Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health. Co-authors of the paper are Blair Beadnell and Marilyn Hoppe, UW School of Social Work research scientists; Diane Morrison, UW professor of social work; and Mary Gillmore, director of the Arizona State University School of Social Work. Rosendo was brought up in the town of Carabanchel, where he would alert for most of his adult disembodied spirit. Having learned guitar at an early age, he dropped out of technology school day as a brigham Young adult in social club to play full-time. He joined a cover tintinnabulation called Fresa, which with time and some personnel office changes became the democratic Spanish rock band Nu. After recording an album with the group, Rosendo rent sour in 1977 due to personality conflicts with some of his bandmates. He took the band's bass voice player and drummer with him and formed a new grouping called Leño. In this new constitution, Rosendo made his recording debut on some stomach records released by the Chapa Discos label in 1978. A year after Leño released their self-titled debut, followed by their sophomore drive Mas Madera in 1980. Following the successful springy disc En Directo (1981) and Corre Corre (1982) Leño participated in the wildly successful Rock de una Noche de Verano tour. Having reached new high of popularity, the band skint up in the fall of 1983. Rosendo squandered little meter in embarking on his solo occupational group, initiated by his 1985 spillage Loopy por Incordiar. Though many of his early releases as a solo artists suffered criticism (Fuera de Lugar, A Las Lombrices) Rosendo stayed artistically active. He recorded prolifically passim the '80s and '90s, generating close a phonograph recording per yr for two decades. My Bloody Valentine To Work On Next Album
My Bloody Valentine could be finishing work on their next album - the long awaited follow-up to their 1991 classic 'Loveless'.
Talking to XFM, Kevin Shields says of the anticipated release: "It was pretty much three quarters made in the 90s. We've got no label support so everything will be finished pretty much independently."
Fellow bandmate Colm O'Ciosoig revealed more of the new album: "It's a very real possibility. There's some good stuff. Yeah, it's just one of those things that had to be that way I guess."
My Bloody Valentine recently reformed and are currently on a comeback tour in the UK. Speaking of a warm-up show at London's ICA, that was held on June 13th, Shields also threw in:
"We were always gonna do it so we just did. We would've ideally done a record first and then done some gigs in ideal world but we're not in an ideal world."

Funnyman ASHTON KUTCHER is contemplating adopting a child with his wife, actress DEMI MOORE.
The 30-year-old is stepfather to Rumer, 19, Scout, 16, and Tallulah, 14 - Moore's daughters with action star Bruce Willis - and the actor insists he dreams of "someday" expanding their brood with children of his own.
But the Hollywood heartthrob admits he hasn't ruled out adoption, since he has always been drawn to the idea of taking in an orphaned child.
He says, "I have thought about adopting a kid my whole life. When I was eight I had a friend called Terry and one day he told me he was adopted.
"He said his parents told him there was a more special bond between them because they picked him. I thought that was pretty profound and I would be open to the idea."

David Cook has won this year’s American Idol, after winning a majority of the 97 million phone votes in his final against David Archuleta.
The two-hour show was full to the rim with performances from the Top 12 contestants, as well as all-star sing-songs by Carrie Underwood, Donna Summer, ZZ Top, and the Jonas Brothers.
Both finalists performed songs by George Michael, with the music legend himself present at L.A.’s Nokia Theatre to treat audiences to a rendition of Praying For Time.
Speaking to the crowd after finding out he’d won, the 25-year old bartender gushed: “I started this season, much to Simon (Cowell)’s chagrin, as the word nerd and I’m absolutely at a loss for words. Thank you guys. This is amazing. Thank you.”
Cook has become the seventh winner of American Idol.
